The Hyppo Pop Wagon – Gourmet Popsicles Via Food Truck, WHAT?!

This past Sunday, we were hanging out at the Community First Natural Life Music Festival. It was a great event. You should definitely check it out when it rolls around again next year. It was very family-friendly and laid back with great music and activities. And oh yeah…food. Great food. Great, healthy, fresh food.

Since the weather was a little on the warm side, we were in the mood for something cool so we decided to check out the Hyppo Pop Wagon. How fun is this food truck, really?! You don’t get much better than gourmet ice pops on wheels. The Pop Wagon (seriously…love the name) is a recent offshoot of The Hyppo, a pretty hip and quirky gourmet culinary venture based in Saint Augustine. With two brick-and-mortar locations in town, they serve everything from gourmet sandwiches, salads, and omelets to waffles and pancakes. They also do amazing teas and coffees, and of course their ice pops. We were so excited to try them out on Sunday at the music festival. The truck itself is so vibrant and colorful and declares one of their mission statements right on the side…EAT FRUIT. According to their website, their pops are made fresh with local ingredients. Looking at the menu, that was certainly clear. They make over 450 different flavors back at their headquarters in Saint Augustine, but at the festival they narrowed it down to just a few. They were offering ice pop flavors like Mango Habanero, Ginger Pineapple, and Blackberry Goat Cheese, along with some yummy-sounding coffee items, too. I played it sort of safe and tried the Strawberry Basil pop. So good and so refreshing. The basil was the perfect complement to the strawberries. And you could tell it was made with fresh fruit. In fact, the guy working the window (the owner and creator, actually) said that they had just recently picked the strawberries themselves from a farm in Plant City. Gourmet ice pop made with fresh Plant City, Florida strawberries picked at the peak of strawberry season?? Yes, please! I consider myself a bit of a strawberry snob, and was in popsicle/strawberry heaven. I absolutely cannot wait to take a roadtrip to Saint Augustine to try out more of their ice pops. And while I’m there, I will be sure to try out some of their actual food offerings, too. Their breakfast menu looks especially tasty.

The Hyppo is up to all sorts of exciting things right now, so be sure to take a look at their website www.thehyppo.com and check out the interview that VisitFlorida.com recently did with them. The Hyppo already sells their ice pops in stores all around Saint Augustine, but have recently started selling them at a few Bono’s BBQ locations right here in Jacksonville!! They have also launched a project on Kickstarter to raise support to buy retail packaging so that they can sell their amazing pops in grocery stores across the state. Better go clear out space in your freezer now, because you will definitely want plenty of room for your Hyppo ice pop stash!
