Delicomb – Breakfast and Lunch, and Seriously Good Local Honey

Overview of Restaurant and Concept: Delicomb is a coffee shop, breakfast and lunch spot in Jax Beach featuring all natural/organic food and ingredients. Delicomb is a hole in the wall at the beach that you could easily miss if you weren’t looking for it.  You do not want to miss it. A big, happy bee greets you on the wall near the entrance along with a few outdoor tables. You walk in to a small counter to order at and a couple of tiny tables. They operate in the quick service style where you walk up to the counter and place your order then they call your name or bring it out when it’s ready.  They offer a huge and varied menu of delicious and varied foods and coffee based drinks. Additionally they offer a handful of unique daily specials that constantly change.

Location: Delicomb is located on the corner of 3rd St. N. and 11 Ave. N. (1131 3rd St N Jax Beach, FL 32250), but their menu states they will soon be moving to the corner of 6th Ave N. at 2nd St. N. which is next to the Casa Marina Hotel.

Food: Delicomb is famous in the beaches community for their Acai bowl (sm $5.95 lg $8.95) so I decided I’d start off with that.  Acai sorbet covered in granola topped with bananas pineapple and blueberry and drizzled all over with a generous amount of local honey. I’m not normally the biggest fruit fan. I generally consider it something to eat for your health more so than something to eat for enjoyment. So the Acai bowl doesn’t seem like something I’d normally be into. I was blown away! It was a beautiful masterpiece of a dish with so many colors and such fresh complimentary flavors. The local honey was the perfect touch to complete this dish. If you haven’t made the switch to local honey, you may want to give it a shot. The flavor is much fuller and supporting local producers is definitely a plus. Delicomb’s acai bowl may have just become my new favorite breakfast item.

We also tried the fried egg sandwich on a homemade biscuit. You can choose to have this sandwich on a bagel or toast as well, but being a southerner I couldn’t pass up a biscuit.  I generally prefer a biscuit with more of a buttery flavor that could be a standalone meal unto itself. Although this biscuit definitely doesn’t fit that description it was still fairly decent.  The biscuit was soft without falling apart under the weight of the eggs, cheese, and bacon, but not at all greasy. It’s a solid execution of a standard quick breakfast food but nothing to write home about.

My wife has this thing for chicken salad, so she had one of the specials- the cranberry curry chicken salad wrap($10). It was curry chicken salad with cranberries, romaine lettuce, carrots, and sprouts on a whole wheat wrap. This was incredibly flavorful, colorful, and filling. The wrap came with a side, which was a choice of sprouted lentils or snap peas. My wife chose snap peas which came cold almost in a salad of snap peas, carrots, and onions tossed in a light vinegar sauce. It had a little kick to it, and it was an enjoyable way to eat vegetables. Probably as good as it gets with cold snap peas.

There wasn’t much on the menu that my picky toddler would even consider eating, so we got him a pumpkin muffin. He didn’t eat it, but we were glad to try it. It had a a very full flavor, but was quite dense. The muffin was topped with ground cinnamon, so it smelled more amazing than it tasted.

In addition to the great, fresh prepared food, there are a variety of drinks at Delicomb. They are a complete coffee and espresso bar with everything from a plain cup of coffee, to lattes, to the Dirty Chai, which is chai and milk with espresso. They also offer a host of bottled organic and otherwise all natural drinks.  I tried to order a coke with my meal and was told they don’t have cokes but they do have all natural sodas. Normally all natural sodas taste terrible in comparison to the Coke and Pepsi products we usually drink. However, the all-natural root beer I had at Delicomb was by far the best all-natural soda I’ve ever had. It would rank right up there with quite a few normal root beers I’ve had as well and I like to consider myself a bit of a root beer connoisseur.

Service: For a quick service restaurant, Delicomb goes the extra mile in how they treat their guests. The employees working behind the counter preparing food were all having positive interactions with one another, which creates a welcoming environment.  Nice touch at a Breakfast and lunch place.

My wife’s iced tea didn’t come out with our food and after a few minutes she walked back in to get her tea and also buy a bottle of water. She had to wait for a few minutes as they were inundated with phone calls. After finishing the calls the man at the counter apologized. When my wife mentioned she hadn’t gotten her tea he apologized and gave her the bottled water free of charge. The tea was a simple mistake, we weren’t upset over it, and we weren’t looking for any type of compensation. But when a restaurant goes out of their way to make something right, it leaves an impression on the guest.

One thing we observed was as Delicomb was wrapping up for the day (they close at 4pm) someone called to see if they could make it before close. They weren’t going to be able to sit and eat, but Delicomb offered to take a to go order with less than 10 minutes until close and with much of the restaurant being cleaned up for the day. This is another situation where they didn’t have to do that. There’s not a guarantee this person on the phone shows up in ten minutes and they likely had to pull things back out from the fridge. They could have easily said sorry, try again tomorrow, but they have passion and pride in their restaurant and it shows.

Positives:

  • The Acai Bowl is unbelievably good!
  • fresh, natural/organic food
  • Open early (7am)
  • Great service
  • Gem of a Breakfast and Lunch restaurant at the beaches

Negatives:

  • Not open for dinner (closes at 4)
  • Not much dining space

You can taste the difference when a restaurant has passion. There was attention to detail in everything, from the daily specials right down to the unsweet iced tea, which was brewed fresh. Stop by Delicomb for a pick-me-up in your day (as long as it’s breakfast and lunch), especially on a nice day where you can enjoy your food outside.
