BB’s of San Marco – Monster Salads and Passionate Service

Located in San Marco, B.B.’s restaurant serves 100% from-scratch food prepared with fresh and local product. BB’s has a very laid back atmosphere and a very friendly staff. On this visit we dropped in for lunch. At dinner time BB’s is fairly high end with fairly high end prices to match. At lunch I was pleasantly surprised that the entire lunch menu was fairly affordable for the quality of food you’re receiving. Most items ran right around $10 to $12. Their lunch offerings include soups, salads, sandwiches, gourmet pizzas, and wonderful appetizers. Additionally BB’s offers the most decadent cakes you could imagine.

Food: We kind of went nuts with this trip since they had some many items we wanted to try. We started things off with the Duck wonton Napoleon ($11)- caramelized onions, tart apples, boursin cheese and balsamic syrup. As you can see from the picture this dish was a piece of art. It was a delight for the eyes and the taste buds. The meat had an amazing flavor and tasted as if it had been cooked for hours. It was very tender. Each layer of the napoleon was filled with delicious duck, boursin cheese and a bit of caramelized onions. It was rich and delicious. My only minor complaint is there was too much cheese. The cheese was a bit overwhelming.

Next we tried the Jambalaya pizza ($13)- andouille sausage, cajun shrimp, chicken, bell peppers, mozzarella, creole tomato sauce.  All of BB’s pizzas are thin crust and none are made with the typical heavy tomato sauce.  They’re very light and perfect for a lunch item. The Jambalaya pizza was wonderful. It wasn’t too saucy and it was done in a way where you could clearly taste every flavor. The pizza actually had a bit of rice or maybe risotto under the cheese which you would think would be weird but it actually delightfully added to the mix of flavors and textures.

Last we split a goat cheese salad ($12)- baby spring mix, candied walnuts, prosciutto ham, medjool dates, goat cheese croutons and warm orange blossom honey. Actually when we asked to split the salad the waiter told us he could bring two small salads for the same price and it’d be better that way.  So we each got a small goat cheese salad. Their salads at BB’s are HUGE!!! Our small salads were the size of entrée salads at most restaurants. The salads had what they called goat cheese croutons on them.  These were pieces of bread with goat cheese baked onto them. They were delicious and perfect to take a bite of with a bite of salad. Again, the salad was a great blend of flavors. The spring mix was crisp and fresh. The candied walnuts added a nice crunch. The orange blossom honey provided on the side so you could drizzle it over the salad was awesome too. You could very clearly taste the sweet orange flavor. The dates added a little something extra as well. All this was finished with a tomato basil vinaigrette that I’m sure you’ll love. We also tried the parmesan truffle fries.  They had a good blend of spices and plenty of shredded parmesan on them and were very tasty. I’d sum up the food by saying simply that BB’s has a knack for getting just the right blend of flavors and making sure no one flavor overpowers the other flavors in the dish.

Service: Our waiter was definitely the most knowledgeable and passionate of any restaurant we’ve visited up to this point.  I asked him to give us a rundown of the menu and he described nearly every dish on it in great detail.  He shared with us that he’s been working at BB’s ten years and the food has always been fantastic. He correctly warned us that the salads were huge. He told us about the dishes he loved and shared lots of little tidbits of info. When you go to a restaurant most of the time you feel waited on. At BB’s we really felt cared for….There’s really something special about having a dining experience that makes you feel that way.

  2. Unfortunately the last 3 times we have gone to this place our meals have been less than palatable. The first of the 3 the Filet Mignon was so fatty I had to return it. The second time we got the special fish meal and both of us got and immediate allergic reaction to which one of the waiters said:They should have taken this dish off the first time it happened which had been that same night. The maitre d came by and just smiled, did not apologized and went away. The last time we just picked up a dessert, not made there, and it was really good but not worth the wait. The loud noise of the place, the blatant fake nicety of the manager and the overall smell of fish in the place just turned us off to the place.
