The Fox – Hip, Fresh, but Still Direct from the 60’s Breakfast in Avondale

Located on St Johns Ave in Avondale the Fox restaurant is a laid back and affordable hole in the wall breakfast and lunch spot. They offer straightforward southern comfort food made from scratch. It’s a really neat place. They pull off the feeling of an 1960’s dinner while simultaneously giving you a feeling like this is a hip fresh sort of place to be. They’re known for their corned beef hash, fried green tomatoes, and their coyote burger-beef patty, fried egg, bacon coyote sauce. The menu offers a little something for everyone from the pizza omelette to the Mediterranean salad that can be ordered with chicken, shrimp, or fried green tomatoes. If you’re coming during breakfast prime time you may have a slight wait so plan accordingly. When we arrived at 9:30am on a Tuesday there was only one table unoccupied in the place. There were a few seats available at the bar/lunch counter.

Food: We started the meal with some pleasantly strong coffee. Then we dove into the fried green tomato appetizer ($6.75)- 4 slices of fried green tomato topped with bacon, bleu cheese, and a mild horseradish sauce. You can taste the horseradish but it’s a nice mild addition and not overpowering like horseradish can sometimes be. These were awesome. Unquestionably the best I’ve had in Jacksonville; Not that there are a lot offered in Jax. Next up was the 2 egg breakfast ($5.50)- 2 eggs, 4 pieces of bacon, grits, home fries or fruit, biscuit or toast. We ordered the eggs over medium. They came out closer to over easy. They were good anyway. The bacon we ordered crispy. It came out not so crispy but they threw it back on the grill for us and it came back perfect. We opted for cheese grits.  If you’ve read my previous breakfast reviews you know I very much prefer the cheese blended throughout the grits. These came with a cheese layer baked on top completely covering the grits.  They used a generous amount of cheddar cheese and it was definitely good. The waiter suggested that if you wanted you could order a side of sausage gravy to top your biscuit with. We couldn’t resist. This sausage gravy was awesome!!! I may not stop talking about how good it was for weeks. It was that good!

Service: We had a great hippie waiter who had hilarious dry humor and an obvious passion for the fox, its food, and its affordable pricing. He was very attentive. He refilled our drinks far before they were empty. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. The service couldn’t have been better.
